Have you ever been in a situation where you’re just trying to listen to something in public like Starbucks or on your commute to work, and all of a sudden a group of people sits down beside you and starts talking loudly? There are plenty of outside noises that can get in your way of listening to your favorite podcast or song. It could be quite annoying if you don’t have a proper pair of noise cancelling headphones. But can noise cancelling headphones or earbuds actually block out ambient sound?
How does noise cancelling technology work?
There are two main types of noise cancellation: active and passive. Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses electronics to actively monitor the sound around you and creates an inverse wave that cancels out the ambient noise. Passive noise cancellation relies on physical barriers, such as ear cups that seal around your ears, to block out outside noise. But for earbuds, they can only help with active noise cancellation, and with the right brand, you can definitely block any loud ambient noise.
At the same time, noise cancelling headphones use a microphone to pick up the low-frequency ambient noise in your environment. The headphone then creates a second signal that is the opposite of the first one. This effectively cancels out the ambient noise so you can hear your music more clearly.
What kind of noises can BOSE headphones cancel out?
Bose headphones use a combination of both active and passive noise cancellation. The ear cups on the headphones effectively block out a lot of the ambient noise around you. And the active noise cancellation feature monitors the sound around you and creates an inverse wave to cancel out the ambient noise.
Bose noise cancelling headphones can cancel out a wide range of outside noises, from low-frequency sounds like engine hums to high-frequency sounds like chatter. And depending on the model, they can even reduce environmental noise by up to 99%.
Here are the different places we’ve tried using the Bose noise cancelling headphones and for this test we used both the QuietComfort® Earbuds and the Noise Cancelling Headphones 700.
- Cafes
- Food Courts
- Theme Parks
What was the result? Well, we ordered the places from the quietest to loudest in terms of noise with cafes being the quietest and theme parks being the loudest. For the cafes, we never heard any noise even though the table beside us was doing some sort of business meeting. As for the food courts, we hardly heard anything at all except for times when someone would shout really loudly. Finally, we tried out both headphones and earbuds at the local theme park in Manila, and the headphones blocked out the noise easily since it uses both active and passive noise cancellation, but the earbuds had trouble blocking out noise from people shouting when you’re standing in line for the roller coaster.
What are some benefits of using BOSE noise cancelling headphones?
There are plenty of benefits to using Bose noise cancelling headphones. For one, they allow you to focus more on your work or what you’re listening to. And they can also help you get a better night’s sleep on an airplane or in a noisy hotel room.
Another benefit is that they can protect your hearing in loud environments. When you use noise cancelling headphones, you don’t have to crank up the volume to drown out the ambient noise around you. This can help prevent long-term hearing damage.
And finally, Bose noise cancelling headphones are just more comfortable to wear for long periods of time. Since they block out so much of the ambient noise around you, you don’t have to strain your ears as much to hear what you’re listening to.If you’re looking for noise cancelling headphones then head over to Eleksis, we are the official distributor of consumer Bose products here in the Philippines.
